Marika Kruijt: A Fairy With Boxing Gloves (elfje met bokshandschoenen)
Marika Kruijt (born 1964) doesn’t care about different styles or streams of art, although she should know better after years of studying art history. Educated to be an art historian, she discovers along the way that she prefers to be an artist herself. Picasso's motto 'I don’t search-I find' is something she can fully identify with. Reaching a state of non-searching is vital for her creative flow. Through the process of making her work, it is necessary for her to be aware and to surrender. Surrender to what? One could call it emptiness. It is only then, that something is created that can move or touch people: beauty for example, or stillness, or joy. When a painting is successful, it exuberates the energy from which it is made. Marika Kruijt doesn’t intend to be original for the sake of being original, nor does she wish to make a political statement, or even tell a story. She considers her work to be truly successful if it makes people feel a sparkle. Sun, source, radiation, light and reflection of light, are returning elements in the magical world of Marika Kruijt. With these elements, she gives shape to themes like Creation, Growth and Blooming (‘groei en bloei’), which in turn cause a suggestion of movement in her overall silent work. It often shows a frozen moment, which could last forever. And if we look a bit longer, we can see the moment before and the moment after as well. Therefore, her work is still, yet full of life. Light and the reflection of light can be poignant or blinding. But if one is open to seeing this light and the energy in her work, it can hit you hard. This way, a sweet and delicate fairy can surprise you with a firm left hook. Text: Bert C. Kroon |
